What makes Stargard different?

BPI Stargard is a specialist PVC sleeved handrailing system that is 4mm (4,000 microns) thick and extremely durable. It has been installed at over 50 UK railway stations over recent years, making it an increasingly popular choice for areas with high footfall and continuous usage.

BPI Stargard is stronger than traditional powder coating, which is on average only 125 microns thick, leaving it susceptible to chipping, scuffing and wear over a short time. BPI Stargard requires little to no maintenance, with a wipe-clean and chip-resistant surface, meaning it is manufactured to last.

Amongst many benefits, our PVC sleeved handrail is ‘warmer to touch’ in comparison to traditional stainless steel alternatives. On-site testing has revealed BPI Stargard is on average 4 degrees warmer to touch when compared against stainless steel in the same environment, however this can vary depending on application. A ‘warmer to touch’ sleeve allows for users to hold onto the rail for longer, improving accessibility and safety.

Our handrail is available in a wide range of UV stable colours and offers a continuous, smooth protective covering, making it ideal for any application.

Why Durability Matters

According to the Office of Rail and Road it was estimated in 2024 that there was a total of 1.6 million passenger journeys across the UK, an increase of 16% from the previous year. With an increase in passenger traffic, it is essential station infrastructure can withstand the increase in demand and footfall.

With increased passenger traffic also comes with an increase in the requirements for accessibility. The Office of Rail and Road also reported there was an 18% increase in Disabled Persons Railcards (DPRC) in circulation at the end of March 2025, in comparison to the previous year.

DDA (Disability and Discrimination Act 1995) compliant handrails and balustrade systems significantly improve accessibility for passengers with disabilities, young children and the elderly, meaning everyone can safely use public transport without barriers or discrimination.

Our handrails are DDA compliant and available in a range of high-contrast UV stable colours ensuring increased visibility and accessibility. BPI Stargard is PVC sleeved, making for a ‘Not Cold to Touch’ handrail that aids in comfort when being used by passengers. Stargard is chip-resistant, extremely durable and easy to clean, making it the perfect, low maintenance solution for railway stations.
